What to Expect
- Visit to the botanical garden
We gather in a botanical garden cared for by a local Yucatecan shaman who has returned to his community’s natural medicine traditions after studying pharmacology and practicing healing work internationally. Here, he tends his father’s legacy—a living space of plants and ancestral knowledge. Within this garden, we will learn about the importance of Hanal Pixán in Maya culture and the profound meaning of honoring those who have passed away.
- Our Hanal Pixán altar
You may bring a photograph of a loved one who is no longer physically with you. We will have the opportunity to place it on the altar as a symbolic way to remember and honor their memory.
- The art of preparing pib
We will learn why pib is such a special element of these dates, how it is prepared, why it is cooked underground, and what this ancient cooking method means. We will take part in the entire process: preparing it, cooking it, and burying it, before sharing it around the table.
- Temazcal / steam bath Overview
While our pibs cook underground, we will learn about what a temazcal is and learn about the significance steam baths have held within the cultures of Mexico.
- Time to share
Once the pib is ready, we will gather to taste it and share food as part of this celebration.
- Music, jarana, and tradition
We will close our experience with Yucatecan jarana, sharing and dancing with the community while celebrating life, our roots, and the joy of keeping our traditions alive.
